“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”— Maya Angelou

You know it's time for you to start telling your stories.

You want to get those stories out. Maybe you've been writing on your own or have had a successful writing practice at one point.

But you're finding that it's nearly impossible to go it alone as a writer, especially at this time in our lives and at this uncertain moment.

Here's what we want you to gain from our membership community:

  • the determination to build a productive writing practice, while balancing writing with the rest of your midlife responsibilities.
  • the bravery to express your voice in an authentic and meaning way.
  • the inspiration to write about what matters to you.
  • the techniques to stretch your writing skills.
  • the persistence to keep writing through setbacks and challenges.
  • most of all, the relationships with other writers that will sustain and guide you on your writing path.

A note from the co-founders...

Jessica Smock and Stephanie Sprenger are the co-founders and co-editors of the HerStories Project, a publishing and writing community for midlife women.

We met online as “blogging friends” and then founded the HerStories Project in 2014. We’ve published four essay collections, edit our HerStories Project website, and have taught writing to hundreds of female writers over the past six years.

It's been our joy to work with midlife writers just like you. Our lives of juggling family and jobs and writing are much like yours. We know what it's like, as midlife women, to want to carve out space in our lives for just ourselves. We hope that you can join us in our HerStories community!

Jessica and Stephanie

What's Included:

#1- Daily mini-lessons and prompts.

Once you're inside the membership, you will choose one of two "tracks" (or both!) — each with its own instruction and exercises — based on your goals and experiences as a writer.

#2- A private community

Each track will have its own private community inside the membership (not on Facebook) just for members. Inside the community, you'll share your writing and reflections, get feedback, ask for support, and connect with other writers. There will also be a (OPTIONAL) private Facebook group for all community members. (We have VERY mixed feelings about Facebook, but lots of our members prefer it to other platforms that we have tried.) You will also be able to access (if you choose) the private membership platform using an app on your phone or tablet.

#3- Weekly Zoom calls

Weekly office hours on Zoom will be for checking in with each other, asking questions, and doing freewrites together. Recordings will be shared for members who can't make them, and you can submit questions and requests for feedback in advance.

#4- Accountability partners

If you choose, you can be matched with an accountability buddy, based on your goals and interests.

We believe that community is everything for writers.

Our membership will guide you and your writing peers through a structured program to help you meet your writing goals, whether those goals are to publish an essay or a memoir or to take the very first steps on your writing journey.

The Result?

A custom plan for amet, metus at rhoncus dapibus.  ipsum dolor sit amet, metus at rhoncus dapibus.

With the confidence and tools to amet, metus at rhoncus dapibus.  ipsum dolor sit amet, metus at rhoncus dapibus.

How do I know if the membership is right for me?

Perfect for you if:

  • You're finding it hard to balance writing with the rest of your life.
  • You want a structured way to find ideas for your writing or to produce a publishable piece.
  • You're overwhelmed by doing this on your own and wish you had someone to bounce ideas off.
  • You want to understand your strengths and weaknesses as a writer.
  • You want to grow and improve as a writer on your own terms.

Not for you if:

  • You think that building a writing practice should come quickly and effortlessly.
  • You aren't willing to set aside just a little time each day (or most days).
  • You want to get published and make money as a writer right away.
  • You think that good writers are just "born that way."
  • You are more interested in crafting a marketing "brand" than writing and hearing authentic stories.
I'm Ready

Wait, what's included again?

A Private Community

Go through the lessons and exercises with a small cohort of fellow writers. Share your writing and ask for support. Meet together weekly on Zoom with Jessica and Stephanie.

Lessons and Exercises

Daily lessons, prompts, and exercises arrive each day (Monday through Friday) and build on each other. Learn new techniques for freewriting, brainstorming, building structure, and revising.

Regular Feedback

Other community members will interact with you and your writing each day (or however often you choose). Jessica and Stephanie are in the communities each day, providing their thoughts and encouragement.

Here's What HerStories Writers Are Saying...

This workshop gave me the structure and companionship to step back into writing and to value what I write. It also gave me the opportunity to enjoy many other pieces of writing from women similar to me. It was a marvellous adventure with fellow travellers, where writing has otherwise felt too solitary in this physically-distanced time, and I am so grateful.

The HerStories #iamwriting workshop got me to write after a long period of procrastination, but more importantly, it impelled me to re-engage the whole practice of writing. I was inspired to sit down and think about my writing, what I want to write, what I need to write, and how I should go about it. It gave me the gentle push I was looking for. Stephanie and Jessica honour every woman’s personal pathway to discovering what works for her. Even in normal times, it’s a rare opportunity for a writer to meet with others to share ups and downs of the writing process. I look forward to continuing and to exploring my writing voice while hearing and reading others.’

I return to the writing workshops provided by HerStories over and over. They are always well-structured, engaging, and challenging enough that I feel like I'm learning something new but also achieving success. This was possibly my favorite one, with interesting and informative mini-lessons and consistent writing sprints.

"Intimate and supportive."

“I loved the intimate and supportive nature of this class and the bravery demonstrated by my fellow participant writers. Jessica and Stephanie’s prompts challenged me creatively and also provided a space for inner reflection and personal healing. A profoundly transformative experience.”

"Knowledgeable, encouraging, genuine"

"This workshop gave me a purpose and a direction I desperately needed in order to return to my writing. I had blamed the pandemic and my overwhelming feelings for not writing in the last year. Turns out, I wasn't writing because I did not know where I wanted my writing to go.....I found the course to be manageable and fluid enough that I could get it in within my crazy, hectic schedule. I found Stephanie and Jessica to be, once again, knowledgeable, encouraging, and genuine. Loved this."

"One of the best experiences of my creative life"

"This extraordinary writing group allowed me to stretch and grow as a writer during the COVID-19 crisis, an incredibly challenging time for me, personally, and the world abound. Writing in the company of a diverse collection of women from all over the United States and abroad was one of the best experiences of my creative life.”
