We are living in unprecedented times.

The news doesn't have to tell us that.

We feel it in our bones.

We want to express how we're feeling and dig deeper into our views, current experiences, and values.

Yet it's hard to find an outlet for this kind of connection and expression.

It's easy to feel alone.

Social media is a dumpster fire of misinformation and unproductive conflict.

We all know it. It was built to be that way.

There is a better place for us, midlife women who want to connect and write.

You want to connect.

But you end up scrolling and feeling angry and empty.

You want to express how you're feeling and why.

But you can't find a forum for sharing that kind of writing.

You want a community of other women who write to get you through these next weeks.

And you're not sure how to find it.

A community of women who write is waiting for you.

Yes, I want to check out the group now

Since early spring, and the start of the pandemic, we've been leading small writing groups very different than the writing classes we usually teach.

We called these groups Small Steps in Uncertain Times.

We posted prompts and exercises as opportunities to get writing to flow and open up. To try out a new writing strategy. To respond to a reading or a prompt. To explore a memory. To make sense of what you're feeling right then, in this new world.

Something incredible happened. Each group formed its own tight-knit community of women learning and growing with each other.

We hope you can join our next group.

Writing Prompts...

Our open-ended writing exercises will push you to explore your own experiences and values as a woman, writer, and as a citizen. You'll have an opportunity to reflect on your hopes, fears, and perspective about this moment.

A Group off of Facebook...

In our experience, Facebook as a platform doesn't allow for the type of deep and meaningful exchange of ideas we want in our writing groups. We have our own private platform, with its own app, off of Facebook. You can post questions, readings, and ideas there anytime, as well as your writing.

Personalized Feedback...

For each response, you'll get feedback and encouragement from your peers and the instructor.

Being accountable to a supportive group of writers got me out of my own way. With regular “deadlines” and a limited time commitment, I was forced to put my perfectionist tendencies aside and just explore some different things happening in my life in a creative way. Each writer’s take on the same prompt was unique, and reassured me that every writer has something important to say. Even if it never leaves the privacy of this uniquely honest and encouraging group.

Small Steps from HerStories is the perfect writing group for a writer like me - someone who craves writing but doesn't always have the time and/or discipline to sit and work. The group participants are warm, welcoming, encouraging and completely free of judgement. The prompts are accessible and inspirational, and Jessica encourages inclusivity and kindness - to each other and especially to ourselves!

WHAT IS THE HERSTORIES PROJECT?

The HerStories Project is a writing and publishing community for women, co-founded by Jessica Smock and Stephanie Sprenger. We have published four successful anthologies, including MY OTHER EX: WOMEN'S TRUE STORIES OF LEAVING AND LOSING FRIENDS. In addition, we publish personal essays from midlife women on our website. Since 2014, we have taught personal essay writing and blogging to hundreds of writers through our online and in-person workshops.

I absolutely loved being in an actively engaged writing community. Prompts were stimulating. Timing was perfect. Editors were on top of things all the way. What a fantastic way to get back to my writing, a reason to write, an audience for sharing, and a safe space to be honest and vulnerable.

Naomi, former Small Steps in Uncertain Times student

I loved the intimate and supportive nature of this class and the bravery demonstrated by my fellow participant writers. Jessica and Stephanie's prompts challenged me creatively and also provided a space for inner reflection and personal healing. A profoundly transformative experience.

Imagine, ten random women being thrown into an opportunity to write, splay themselves raw with words and thoughts, and not think twice about doing so. How easily a group of like minded creatives can come together with the right leadership, and a safe place. What a timely and important experience this has been for me.

The HerStories Project has created an inviting and creatively enriching online space with "Small Steps in Uncertain Times.” This extraordinary writing group allowed me to stretch and grow as a writer during the COVID-19 crisis, an incredibly challenging time for me, personally, and the world abound. Writing in the company of a diverse collection of women from all over the United States and abroad was one of the best experiences of my creative life. The fresh and current prompts and topics we were given to write about were thoughtful and insightful, and worked harmoniously to underscore the point of the class, and proved to further ignite the writer's flame from deep inside of me. I'm proud of my progress and efforts in this class, and appreciated the critiques and supportive comments I received from the community on each piece of writing I submitted for review. Likewise, I feel privileged to have read and responded to the stories of my classmates, and feel fortunate to know them by their complex, intricate, and masterfully crafted personal accounts. The HerStories Project offered a chance for me to join a brilliant tribe of women writers, granting us the opportunity to turn our varied experiences, feelings, and trials into storied works of art. Writing together with this incredible community of women writers is an experience I will always cherish. Fondly, I will forever remember how during the pandemic of 2020, I was a part of something that truly mattered: writing and sharing stories in solidarity.
